18th Year Commemoration of Jonas Burgos: A Call for Justice and Truth

ManilaPhilippines – April 26, 2025 – This April 28th, 2025, marks not just the 18th year since the enforced disappearance of Jonas Burgos, but a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for justice and accountability in the Philippines.

Sixteen years after the abduction of Jonas Burgos on April 28th, the families faced a further tragedy when human rights defenders DexterCapuyan and Bazoo de Jesus disappeared on the same date, solidifying April 28th as a day of profound sorrow. To honor the memory of Jonas, Dexter, and Bazoo, a moving event will be held, bringing together families of the disappeared to share their stories and renew their collective commitment to justice.

The event will take place on Monday, April 28th, 2025, from 1:30 PM to 5:30 PM at the UPFI Film Center. It will feature a special screening of the Cinemalaya award-winning documentary Alipato at Muog, directed by Jonas Burgos' brother, JL Burgos. This powerful film offers a deeply moving portrayal of Jonas' life and the lasting impact of his disappearance.

Beyond the film screening, the event will include:

A Quick talk One-on-one with Kenneth Guda covering desaparecidos.
A Live script reading of Waiting for Goto, a play written by Bern De Belen featuring actors Lui Manansala and Grundy Constantino with the special participation of Soliman Cruz.  Bonifacio Ilagan will join the roster as narrator.
A flash paper crane making by Yumi Burgos
Solidarity Action: A conclusionary act at the end of the event by all participants in remembering Jonas, Dexter, and Bazoo and expressing hope with the ongoing struggle for justice and accountability.

This commemoration is more than just a remembrance; it is a testament to the unwavering resilience of those who refuse to let their loved ones' cases fade into obscurity. It's a call for continued investigation and a demand for the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to fully cooperate and reveal the whereabouts of Jonas Burgos and others who have disappeared. The event serves as a powerful symbol of hope and a renewed commitment to seeking truth and justice.

All are welcome to attend and stand in solidarity with the families.
